I got my first (and last) AOL Instant Messenger screen name in 1998. It was amwangel (not ‘am wangel’ – my initials + ‘angel’).
In the course of flirting with boys and chatting with friends on AIM, sometimes an unknown screen name like, “SK8TR69” or “WheezerRULZ” would pop up, requesting to chat with me. I’d accept, thinking it might be a friend who found me.
“Wanna cyber?”
Er. So, not usually a friend. Just a creepy guy (or girl) looking for some action online. Weirdos.
Unfortunately for “Cyber Monday” – the word ‘cyber’ unfailingly makes me think of those creepy strangers IMing little eighth grade me and scarring me for life.
