This is why I’ve been slacking and not making goals till June 8th. Vacaaaaaation.
[May Update]
ROUTINE | Working out: daily 7 minute work out & three miles 2-3 times a week. Success! I ran 12 times and did the 7 minute work out most days. I also went for lots of walks and did some fitnessblender workouts. When working out becomes the norm and not the exception, that’s my sweet spot. Not training for a race or meeting some goal, but just making physical activity a deep rooted habit.
READ | Fun book: Nothing. I got Code Name Verity from the library, but I seem to lack time for actual book reading these days. I’m in a reading slump.
Non-fiction: Mindless Eating was a fantastic book. I might do a full review of it because it was really practical and I loved it.
LEARN | 10-15 minutes of Codeacdemy a day. Flop. I did it sporadically then not at all. Oops.
HABIT | Don’t let any dishes rest in the sink & keep kitchen counters clear. A great success. And one that will stick with me, I think. I’ve gotten better about keeping the kitchen and bathroom clean even when nothing else is, but this was such little bits of time that I never really had to do a big clean. Very nice.
NAGGING TASK | Call a cleaning person to do a deep clean. Done. And fairly expensive, so I’m not sure I’ll do it again. But it was a nice treat!
[June Intentions]
ROUTINE & SYSTEMS | Get a post-launch system for websites into place. Complete with goodbye packet including security recommendations, FAQ, and all branding elements. I’m reinventing the wheel every time and since my goal this year is to automate more, this is next on my list!
LEARN | Complete Javascript training on Codeacademy. Let’s try this again, but a smaller goal.
Install a non-Google fonts webfont. Nerdy nerdery.
HABIT | No nail biting. I have a bad habit. I’m going to try just to be aware of when I’m biting my nails and tell myself to stop. We’ll see how that goes. (Gabe offered to pay me for each nail I didn’t bite, a la Sister Bear. Ha.)
SANITY & RELATIONSHIP | kindness meditation. I’m going do a loving kindness or compassion meditation about Mike every morning. Hopefully it makes me a nicer person.
Don’t house hunt at all. We’ve known we’re moving for about 4 months now and have two months until we actually move. Things are discouraging, but even moreso now that we’ve learned about the lead paint laws in Massachusetts, which essentially makes landlords less likely to rent to families with children. (Plus, it’s actually legal in MA to refuse rent to families with children when people over 55 live in the building. Say what?) We’re still not ready to commit to buying before we know the area, so things are feeling dismal. Taking the month off house hunting for our sanity.

I LOVED Mindless Eating! Can’t wait to read your review.
I like the idea of a kindness meditation lot — I think I’ll start incorporating that into my (not-so-regular) morning practice.
Ashley says
Ha! My morning practice is also best described as “not so regular” :)
Or “when I’ve had a good night’s rest and happen to wake up early.” ;)

I can’t believe the rules/laws in MA about renting to couples with children and etc… seems like that should surely be illegal. Don’t blame you for taking the time off from house hunting. Discouraging indeed!
I hope you share more details about your vacation. Looks positively blissful to me :)

I just finished mindless eating over the weekend! That book speaks the truth. I have failed miserable over the no-nail-biting pact. I have been biting nails since I was in school and still do it. yikes!
The rules about renting to families with kids are ridiculous. Hope you find a house that you like!
Rob says
Senior Housing is actually exempt from FHA and it’s not just a Massachusetts thing. But it really shouldn’t be a huge chunk of the housing market (unless you’re in FL or AZ, I imagine).

House hunting from afar always feels dismal (I’ve tried it). It will be much easier once you’re there.

Great job with your May intentions :) And your vacation looked so beautiful now that you are back to social media (yay!). That totally sucks about the laws in MA. Believe it or not, I didn’t really know any of that since when I rented I didn’t have a kid, and now that I have one I own my house. When you are ready to go back to the rental search, see if you can find a facebook group or e-mail group of moms in the area you want to live. I know near me, people are always posting “family friendly rentals” that have been tested for lead paint and all that.

I don’t think that the rule about it being legal to not allow children if people 55+ live there applies to typical apartments. I’m not sure if it’s just a MA thing but we have 55+ communities – basically apartment complexes for people 55 and older. The way the rule reads to me is that if it was a community created to be 55+ (“building intended for…”) they do not have to allow children. I think it is just a law to allow those retirement communities to be legal and senior housing to be seniors only. You and mike wouldn’t be able to live in the places that meet those guidelines anyway :-) (at least I hope I am right on this!!!) It seems dismal from far away and I am in my third massachusetts apartment and reading about renting here sounds so horrible – but it’s not! We have so many children where I live I almost think we are the outsiders to not have them!
Ashley says
True! That’s totally normal (like saying you have an income requirement to live somewhere – not really discrimination.) But I guess it feels like “Intended for” is different than this language: “It is against the law to refuse to rent to someone with children, unless the building has three units or less, one of the units is occupied by an elderly person (65 years or older), and the presence of children would constitute a hardship to that elderly person.”
We live somewhere now with a LOT of older people in our building (granted, it’s over 3 units) and they all are happy to see little kids, so I’m not sure about the “hardship” clause?
Anyway, there can always be a difference between law and how the law is followed – hopefully we don’t find ourselves excluded on the basis of having kids!

I’m going to check out the 7 minute app. I found the studies in “Mindless Eating” so interesting, esp the soup one! Enjoy your vacation!

I’ve been doing the “no dishes in the sink/keep kitchen counters/table clean” thing for a couple of weeks and I LOVE it. It’s amazing how good it feels to wake up to a clean kitchen! The hardest part has been training my husband to help with the dinner dishes when I have to work in the evenings :D Good luck with your house hunt – it sounds ridiculous. We’ve taken a break from our house hunt too, mostly because everything currently for sale in the neighbourhood we want to be in is too expensive and too dumpy. I have no idea where people come up with their prices!
