Why I Signed Up
I’ve been wanting to sign up for Stitch Fix for quite some time:
- I don’t like shopping
- I hate trying stuff on at the store
- They got petite sizes this spring!
- I have little fashion sense -so paying someone to pick stuff out for me? I’m there!
I hadn’t signed up because I kept being pregnant and then I was nursing a tiny baby and now I’m finally ready to refresh my wardrobe. So I sent them my questionnaire (and included the link to my Pinterest style board) and signed up!
As you might imagine, I have quite a minimal wardrobe, so it’s important to me that my clothes are versatile and not super trendy. Since leaving my office job almost 2 years ago, I haven’t settled into a perfect nice-casual look for myself. It’s either dressy for work or totally sloppy PJs at home. I’m hoping to find a balance with clothes I can wear working and playing at home but not feel like a total slob. (And yes, I generally still stick to about 33 items at a time in my closet.)
Overall thoughts
- Pretty impressed with the choices overall – the colors are very me and the quality seems pretty good.
- It’s more than I usually spend on clothing and I selected “the cheaper the better” for all items. I’m willing to spend more on clothing, though if it’s quality and versatile.
On to the items! I have to decide by Friday, so let me know what you think. (I should mention that I already spent $20 on the service – so if I keep nothing, it goes away, but if I buy something it gets subtracted from the cost. So!)
Just Black Dean Skinny Jean in Navy (but totally is purple) – $78
These are the only petite item from my box. They fit me really well – are super comfy and I’m cool with the crop look – but I don’t know that I will pay almost $80 for purple jeans. I’m not crazy about the ankle zip, either.
(BTW these shoes are comfy)
Loveappella Crochet Detail Knit Top – $48 & Romolo Chevron Necklace $28
I do like this, I think? Wasn’t sure whether to tuck it in or not (is it totally lame to tuck in shirts? I KNOW NOTHING YOU GUYS) But it’s not petite sized and I have super narrow shoulders, so I the slits for the shoulders are way off. (See bottom left for how wide it is.)
(BTW these jeans are super comfy)
Market & Spruce Striped Dolman Top $48 & Romolo Stacked Chevron Necklace $28
Probably my favorite – it’s a little baggier than I usually get, but looking at these photos I might like it enough to keep. Again, it’s way more than I typically spend on tops.
The necklace is pretty cute – but I have a heavy gold necklace I also wear a lot so I’m not sure if I want it.
41Hawthorn Colibiri Solid Tab Sleeve Blouse $48
I tried a few ways to make this work (roll up the sleeves! leggings! jeans! belt! no belt!), but I think it’s just not for me. I love the color and the shoulder detail, but I just don’t feel comfortable in it and I think it might be a tad big.
Target Plaid Tunic (?) $25
Okay, you caught me, this was not part of my Stitch Fix, but I recently picked it up at Target. Is it terrible? It feels like I’m wearing PJs when I wear it with my leggings – does it also look like I’m wearing PJs? Should I belt it? Should I get a narrower belt? Should I tuck it in?
Thanks for the help, more-fashionable-than-I am friends! Have you done Stitch Fix? Any tips for getting a good box? I’m not sure if I’ll do this every month – but maybe every few months?

Okay, you are so beautiful I’m sure you would look good in a burlap sack but the price point on these items made me vote “return” for most.
Ashley says
Right? Where’s my stitchfix for cheapskates? (I already spent $20 on the service…which you get back if you buy something. So I’m pretending the tops are $28 instead of $48. ;))

i like the black top and the striped one as well. i used to use stitch fix but I stopped because i didn’t think the quality matched the price and i often found myself keeping the cheapest items so as not to lose my $20, and not because i loved it. I once purchased a pair of pants from them for $90 and after one wear a seam in the crotch unraveled. I took them to a tailor to repair, but i cant believe for what i spent that i had to get them fixed so quickly.
I recently learned that if you find a stylist you like you can request that person for your future boxes so you’re getting clothes that suit your taste more, but that’s not enough to send me back to them. I should confess I enjoy shopping (in small doses) and probably have more free time than you cause i don’t have kids so it was pretty easy for me to give it up. i do miss getting mystery boxes full of clothes though!

First, everything looks great on you!! My favorites are the striped doleman and the jeans. But personally I wouldn’t buy jeans at that price if I couldn’t get away with wearing them almost everyday. And the purple/blue color makes them more speciality jeans. But just know, if you keep them, they look like they fit perfectly. :)
I struggled for 4 months of StitchFix. I felt like I was telling them more often about things I DONT like than things I did. I kept having to say “no more dolemans” because I love them but that is literally 90% of what they were sending me. WHY SO MANY DOLEMANS?! Or then they would style my box well but after telling them So Cal is over 100° through October, I would get heavy sweaters that I can’t even wear in February.
I could get past the cost for the right outfit but it was a struggle to get my style. And just when I thought they found it, I would get a pink ikat freaking doleman again. Ha. So I put a pause on it while I focused on losing weight.
I will probably try it again in the Fall/Winter though. It’s a fun experience. And so many friends swear by it. Just have patience with your stylist and don’t be afraid to say what you absolutely will NOT wear.
Alexa says
It seems so fun but I’m presently too cheap!
San says
I love the grey-striped top… that’s definitely a keeper.
Everything else is more ‘meh’… although I like the idea of purple cropped pants (but not for $80!).
P.S. On a different note… in hopes that I don’t come across as desperate… I noticed today that when I @reply on Twitter, you never respond… which is why I checked and realized that you don’t follow me (and since my Twitter is private, you can’t see my @replies… bummer!). It’s totally ok if that’s intentional (we all have to keep our Twitter list short ;)), just wanted to mention it in case you weren’t aware or something (and please, dont feel obligated to change that … this is just an FYI comment).

I knew some things seemed off after I deactivated and reactivated my account a few months ago! I keep finding that happened when I go to DM someone. (Though I am also not the best at replying to all my @s since I’m always trying to figure out how to be on there without spending hours on there…the ever present struggle!)
Allie says
I think you look fabulous in everything, but I also think it’s silly that they only sent you one piece in petite, and I’m with you on the price points being high. I tend toward T.J. Maxx/Marshalls. But I’m also in the same work from home clothes slump.
Jenny says
I don’t have an issue with the price points, and I do think it all looks great on you, but I feel like all the pieces are just not quiiiiiiiiiiite right in several tiny ways. The shirts all look just a bit too blousy and wide in the underarms in particular. I think they’re definitely on the right track, though, so I hope you’ll give feedback and try another box! My favorites were the dolman top and the tab sleeve blouse.
Oh, and the Target top doesn’t read “pajamas” to me at all. :)
Kelly says
As others have said, I think you look great in all the clothes but I am cheap about clothes (and also not fashionable) so I wouldn’t pay the price for most of these. This is why I also have not tried Stitch Fix yet… cheapness :)
Sarah says
Everything is pretty darn cute & you look fabulous. However, I’m expecting my first fix next week & my rule will be that the size better be pretty close to perfect & I’ll have to love it to keep it. I rarely pay full price for clothing (just too many good deals to be had) so they will have to be pieces that I feel amazing in.
Laura says
I haven’t tried Stitch Fix, so I can’t say what would help with getting good boxes. My advice, however, is that if you don’t really love the pieces they sent you, send them back. I know you lose the $20, which is a bummer, but better to be out the $20 than to pay that plus more for a piece of clothing that you don’t really love or that doesn’t fit just right.
The best advice I ever read about putting together outfits was to go to a store you like (say Loft or Gap) and look at the outfits the mannequins are wearing. Usually a stylist for the store/brand put those outfits together. Then find the clothes in the store in your size and buy them. It saves time because you don’t have to try to piece together an outfit and makes shopping a lot easier. At first I thought this wouldn’t work for me because I was used to buying things off the sale rack, to save money, but nothing ever went together, and I ended up wasting money because I didn’t wear so many of the things I bought. I finally realized that it was better to spend money on clothes that I really love, that fit well, and that are well made (and made to last). I ended up with fewer clothes, but now I don’t have to worry about what goes with what and I know that I will actually wear what I bought. Also, I don’t buy clothes as often, only when I want to add a new outfit to the mix. Hope that helps!

So I love the pants, and I have three (THREE) pairs of ankle cropped jeans with zipper detail and I adore them. They are my favorite. And I love colored jeans. They just feel so fancy when they’re not. So. Take of that what you will.
Ris says
As another petite person (I’m 5′ tall and have the narrowest shoulders ever) I share your struggle with finding clothes that fit, but to me, none of these stitch fix items look like they fit you well, except for the $80 jeans. Don’t get me wrong, the jeans are super cute, but I personally would have a hard time spending $80 on purple jeans. I do, however, think the Target top is the cutest thing in the bunch, and seems to fit you the best as well, especially in the shoulders and arms. Again, you look fabulous in everything above, but it all looks just a little big or just a little less tailored than I think your adorable frame deserves.
Ashley says
The petite struggle. When I was working at an office, I had the HARDEST time finding the tailored clothes (button ups, etc) that fit me well. I always said it was like finding clothes for a 12 year old. I loved Loft’s petite sizes on clearance, though!
Nora says
I definitely think you should get the gray/black sweater and the one that is eggplant crochet knit top; definitely winners/keepers! I like the top you got at Target. I think it’s great with a belt and it looks really cute on you. I’ve not done Stitch Fix ever; I think I may be one of the few bloggers who hasn’t. Maybe someday…!
Heidi says
Love love the striped dolman. Love the necklace but if you’re uncertain if you’re going to wear it, probably doesn’t make sense to keep it.
I love the Target tunic – i’m obsessed with tunics – both for weekends and for work (skinny black dress pants + colorful tunic and pretty flats? Winning all around.
The biggest piece of advice for anything though – especially since the Stitch Fix price points are a little on the higher side of what they might actually be worth – ask yourself if you feel good in it, if you really love it, what would you wear it for (every day? can it be dressed up? dressed down?) and how long do you think it will last (for example, earlier this year i bought a pair of jack rogers sandals for $100+ but the last pair i loved and used for four years which when you break it down is roughly $25 per season and if i wear them 3 days/week for 10-16 weeks that’s a really amazing price per wear) or what will the price per wear be? Are you going to be tired of it in a couple of months?
That being said, i love some of the comments about finding a store and checking out how they style outfits in-store or online (i do this frequently with Loft and Old Navy – occasionally gap and sometimes JCrew Factory). Also i started reading more style/fashion blogs for inspiration. I pin regularly to my style inspiration board and to my retail therapy board which is more like a wish list :) ;)
I’m waiting on my first stitch fix to arrive and am REALLY looking forward to it :) I’m a big fan of shopping….sometimes. When the mood hits me…but i just don’t have time for it anymore and my wardrobe has changed from casual SAHM to casual agency (which was pretty much the same) but now I’m in a more business-y casual environment and leggings just don’t fly 5 days/week anymore :( :( :(
Ashley says
Wow, such great advice!
I really enjoy looking put together – I just am terrible at doing the shopping to put myself together. Maybe I should just give someone $200 and tell them to go shopping for me. ;)
Since having Gabe, I’ve realized that I CAN spend more on MY clothes because I never grow out of them! It was an epiphany when I saw how quickly kids grow out of stuff when they’re small – it makes sense to not invest in high quality pieces. But for me? I’m not going anywhere, so might as well invest more and have to shop less later. ;) (I just bought a $100 pair of Birkenstock Gizehs this summer for this very reason!)
Jess says
OK but I LOVE those purple jeans and I’ve also found that you get what you pay for with jeans. Like, the reason they fit so well is probably because they are higher quality, and that’s why they cost so much. And I think the ankle zips are awesome. BUT, $80 is a lot to pay for jeans you aren’t sure about. But oooh they’re so great. I want them!
Tia says
Jess got me started on Land’s End, which is now my absolute favorite work clothing that I didn’t even know existed before she mentioned them. I’m pretty sure they have petites, and online they show you different ways you can wear the same pieces.
Natasha says
I have the striped dolman top from stitch fix also. I have done four fixes now. I started because my teens told me I need fashion help.
Heather says
I agree with everyone that the Target shirt looks great. The jeans look great too. But try them with the colors in your wardrobe to make sure they work. I have a purply navy T-shirt that I find does not work with anything warm-tone (which is most of my wardrobe). The other shirts are cute, especially the gray striped. But they do seem big through the shoulders and underarms. I might be tempted to keep the necklace because it’s only $8 more, and it will give you an different accessory option. I don’t mind wearing the same clothes over and over when I can accessorize them different ways. Of course, if you’re not a jewelry person and you don’t wear it, it would be waste of money even if it’s only $8.
Holly says
I wish Stitch Fix was a thing in Canada … I would be all over it! I love the gray striped top and the tunic from Target – I voted “return” for everything else just because of the prices. I spent $17 on a t-shirt last week – on clearance! – and nearly had a heart attack. I kept it because I really liked it, but yeah. I hate spending money on clothes!
Ashley says
My gray shirt I’m wearing with the purple pants was 8 dollars. I feel you.
Kathleen says
I got that striped Dolman top from Stitch Fix (in a different color) and I love it. It was good for maternity and I still wear it now.
I’m a fan of the tunics, but I like the baggy look. I don’t like them belted. I think that belt might look good with a dress, but it seems so thick to wear with jeans.
You’re gorgeous though. :)
Linnea says
I didn’t realize stitchfix was that spendy. I always have good luck finding gently used (or brand new!) clothes at goodwill or plato’s closet. Saves money, then we can put more toward travel, and my stuff feels more like a treasure because I “found” it. Last week I found a brand new w/ tags pair of citizens of humanity jeans (tag price $218) for just $18 at Plato’s. If it’s well curated, I barely have to dig. I was also in and out within 20 minutes. Bonus. Just get Mike to watch the kids.
Ashley says
I adore Plato’s Closet! Sadly I think my issue is I don’t know what to buy…so I need a stylist. ;)

Ashley! Let me help ya girl!
1. I take pics of mannequins all the time for inspiration. I think someone mentioned that & it really helps.
2. Those clothes were nice but seem a bit trendy when you seem to be a “classic” dresser. Random Zippers & chevron are a trend & I hate for you to spend tons of $$ on items that will soon be off trend.
3. I use the site shopstyle.com & it will send you an email when an item you tag goes on sale.
4. I buy an many “cropped ” style pants at the end of summer as they tend to fit my 5 ft frame best. I wear these as normal pants. I will buy black pants & dye them when they start to fade.
5. I buy a few bright colored button ups, sweaters & tunics to wear under my “base” clothing ie: neutrals
I hope this helps & I’ll send the link of a petite sizes blogger that has great reviews on clothing.
XOXO

Thank you SO MUCH for the recommendation on those flats from Payless.
I just bought three pairs for only $50. They are so comfortable! I’m training for my first marathon, plus I teach so I’m standing all day. This is the first pair of flats I’ve ever found that is comfortable to stand in all day. Comfy + cute + cheap. Total winner.

Oh hooray! This pleases me immensely.
